Hiroshi Matoba

He studied product design and sound design at Kyushu University(Fukuoka/Japan) and started making a visual sequencer as a part of his research theme, developing a new music notation system to update the legacy linear timeline system. In 2009, his early work Overbug for a circular notation system was invited to Transmediale and other media art festivals in Italy, Argentina, Taiwan, etc. He also works with electronics to realize projects such as Light Valve (installation for transparent display) or Denki Domino (light and sound domino). From 2012 to 2017, he was in charge of software development and technical direction at Studio Ryoichi Kurokawa and contributed to large-scale projects including node 5:5, unfold. Currently working as an independent freelance artist/programmer in Berlin. He received Japan Media Art Award 2022 Grand Prix as a member of the Sun and Moon Room project which started from an interest in the rhythmic relationship between human and planet movement.
