node 5:5 is a large scale kinetic audiovisual installation by Ryoichi Kurokawa. 10 sets of actuator and laser throw red laser beams on the 4k projection image in perfect sync. I was in charge of video footage creation, technical research & direction and actuator motion control. We investigated several different aproach to achieve Ryoichi's idea. A biggest technical challenge was to project laser beam from 40m away from the screen and move the beam fast to the left and right. We concluded placing laser units on the side of the truss wall in diffrent height and projecting laser beam toward pentaprism on the moving actuator. And then Pentaprisim reflects laser beam to the screen. We selected FESTO's high speed and high acceleration toothed belt axis to satisfy laser motion composition. TwinCAT3 and ofxBeckhoffADS control 10 FESTO axes less than 10ms delays.
